I bought the hardcover when it came out in 2015. Going back through my underlines years later felt like meeting an earlier version of myself. This book helped me understand the history of autism and the bigger picture around neurodiversity, but the moments I marked were also deeply personal. I had put three stars beside a passage about a child saying “love mama.” Those small moments of progress can feel enormous to a parent. I want other parents to understand that joy. I also marked passages about speech being difficult even for highly verbal autistic people, and about families being denied the services they need. There is so much we miss when we judge someone's experience from the outside.
