I file this under books that change how you look at the world and the people around you. Of course that affects how you parent. It helped me understand that the effects of trauma can continue long after an experience has ended. In coaching, I think a lot about what happens when someone's nervous system is overwhelmed. This book made me more curious about what may be underneath behavior that looks like defiance or avoidance. I don't want to assume that what I see tells me the whole story. I found the later chapters hopeful, especially the discussion of movement, rhythm, and connection. It opened me up to thinking more creatively about supporting people when they're struggling.
