I listened to this book and read it, and I keep thinking about it. So many parents feel like their teens are lazy or unmotivated. This book asks us to look more closely at how disconnected they may feel from learning and exploring, and to consider which learner is in our house. We can get angry that schools don't always make room for curiosity, creativity, and self-direction. But there is still so much we can do as parents to help learning feel relevant and encourage interests that don't fit neatly into school. For me, the surprise was realizing that I already encouraged my neurodivergent teen to follow his passions, but my achiever-type son might need the same—or even more—encouragement to find what lights him up. Getting the gold star and finding meaning aren't automatically the same thing.
