I was talking to a friend who was frustrated because she felt like her teen was just unmotivated. At the same time, I was reading this book, and I honestly wanted to hand it to her. It offers such a helpful reframe for how we think about motivating, connecting with, and supporting our teens. Dr. Lockhart is also a parent coach, and I think that shows. The examples feel practical and relatable, and I appreciated the reflection questions at the end of each chapter. My favorite chapter is “Stop Fighting Fake Battles.” We talk about this all the time in coaching: parents get caught in daily power struggles over things that aren't actually their biggest priorities. Is this really the battle I want to fight? I also loved the distinction between discipline and punishment. Teaching, boundaries, and connection give us much more to work with than consequences alone. Talk with your teen instead of at them. Notice what's going well. And if you're parenting a teen with ADHD, there's a whole section devoted to that, which I thought was especially valuable.
